To address these challenges, Volmary invested in the Seedling Scan Pro, an AI-powered vision system developed by AgriData Innovations (ADI). The goal: streamline seedling evaluations, gain objective insights, and ultimately increase operational efficiency.
Faster and more objective evaluations — anytime, anywhere
"Previously, our team would manually count sample trays to assess the number of usable plants. Now, we are able to scan much more trays in a shorter time and get the results directly into our ERP system without the need of transferring them manually" explains Thomas Mengede from Volmary. "With the Seedling Scan Pro, we now scan multiple trays within a minute, receiving consistent and objective results — far beyond what's possible manually."
The system is easy to operate: scan a barcode, place the tray in the unit, and let the system do the rest, he shares. "Evaluation of the resulting images is straightforward, and staff can view results remotely — reducing the need for constant presence in the greenhouse. This has freed up valuable time and made our process much more efficient."
Efficiency gains with ERP integration
Volmary is working toward full integration of the Seedling Scan Pro with their ERP system from PAT Data Concept Systems. Once complete, this will allow for automatic adjustment of sowing quantities based on real-time germination rates — eliminating the need for manual counting and data entry.
"If a variety is once set up correctly and the ERP link is active, we'll be able to adjust sowing plans more efficiently," the Volmary team adds. "This means more precise surplus management and better alignment between planning and production."
A future-proof tool for data-driven growing
Volmary also emphasises ADI's customer support: "The team reacts quickly, is open to suggestions, and solves issues fast. They've been a great partner in helping us get the most out of the system."
Although the integration process is still ongoing, Volmary sees the Seedling Scan Pro as a long-term investment in data-driven horticulture. "We're confident that once fully embedded in our workflow, it will save us a lot of time and help us take the next step in reliable seedling production."
